Harvest

Fall is always apple season in our household. My husband loves everything apple - apple pie, apple crisp, apple cider and applesauce. Over the years we've played around with applesauce recipes, but the one we come back to year after year is a recipe that includes adding cranberries to the applesauce.

Cranberries have been labeled as a "super food", because they are packed full of antioxidants. These tiny red, tart berries contain high levels of vitamins C, A, and K. They also contain minerals such as potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and calcium. The best part of the berries is that they contain bioactive compounds calledproanthocyanidins, which are believed to help prevent chronic diseases.

My family doesn't care much about all the health benefits of cranberries; the flavor is what matters most to them. The added bonus is the beautiful color the applesauce gains from the addition of cranberries.

Next time you're making some homemade applesauce, throw in a few cranberries, for added flavor, your health and the gorgeous pink color! Just be sure to use a sieve once the berries and apples finish cooking.
