Winterizing Your Home

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

While a few warmer days linger, it's a perfect opportunity to prepare your home for winter. When we all go indoors due to the cold, it's comforting to know your home is ready and your surprises are kept to a minimum.

The article included in this blog is a nice way to check off any potential concerns or dangers for your home. One major area of concern is with water. Water is often one of the biggest culprits for problems, and can be one of the costliest as well. We have 2 sump pumps in our basement that can run pretty regularly, and they can die over time without being aware. Luckily with having 2 pumps, it's a bit like having a back-up, but what if the second pump goes while you are unaware the first had already died? Fall is a great time to check on your pumps too.

Another point I would remind you of are the smoke detecters in your home. Why is it that they always go off in the middle of the night, on a night when it's particularly important you get a good night sleep? Grab a bunch of 9-volt batteries from your local store and change every single smoke detecter in your home (even the one in the attic). If you are using an electronic calendar, be sure to set the reminder to "on" and set it for today's date, but one year forward - and mark it to remind you not only for next year, but every year following. It's a great way to avoid having the beeping sound ever be a bother again.

Read through the article for other great ideas. Thanks for reading!
